Introducing Depth of Anesthesia

This is a podcast exploring the depth of our critical thinking around clinical practices. Anesthesia is full of claims. A claim is a practice decision that we either believe is true or is something we default to. We think that for every claim in anesthesia, we should know what is supported or refuted by evidence and what claims have no evidence base but "stand to reason". We hope you start to see these claims and become less satisfied not knowing what you don't know.

Welcome to a brand new podcast that's coming from the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. I'd like to introduce Dan. Hi, I'm Dan Saddawi-Konefka. I'm the program director for the Anesthesia Residency here. And I'm David Hao.

I'm one of the CA1 residents. So let's tell you a little bit about what this podcast is going to be about. We call it the depth of anesthesia, and it's all about the depth of our critical thinking around our practice habits. Uh we make claims all the time. We do things with thinking, without thinking, because we either believe that's true or it's what we've defaulted to.

We think we ought to do better. We think that for every claim that we have in anesthesia, we should know what's supported by evidence, what level of evidence, and what's not supported by evidence, uh, but maybe stands to reason We want you to start seeing these claims though they can often be hard to see, and we want you to become a little less satisfied not knowing what you don't know. Yeah. The idea of continually questioning your own practice I think that seed of dissatisfaction is what leads to lifelong learning. Awesome.

Really excited to get this going. Welcome. We hope you enjoy it.
